The name Seat comes from "Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo" (Spanish society for traffic vehicles). The enterprise was founded in 1950. In the first years they manufactured primarily modified Fiats. Principal shareholder was the Spanish state. Today, Seat belongs to Volkswagen.
