In 1910 the Societá Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (briefly A.L.F.A.) started business in Milan. Nicola Romeo overtook the leadership of the plant in 1915. Around 1918 the enterprise called itself Alfa Romeo. The brand name consists of two symbols of Milan. The red cross originates from the city arms of Milan and the snake goes back on the Visconti clan. In 1986 Alfa Romeo was bought by Fiat.
